Beijing holds 10th China International Meat Industry Summit

Organised by International Meat Secretariat (IMS) and China Meat Association (CMA), the China International Meat Industry 2010 Summit opened on June 28, at Hotel Nikko New Century in Beijing. The summit has attracted nearly 800 people, including representatives from Chinese and foreign government agencies, embassies, authorities, industry organisations, as well as experts and scholars.

In his speech, IMS President Patrick Moore said that despite global economic recession, the prospect for meat industry is bright. He also mentioned that by 2025, the global demand for meat will increase by 40%. In this respect, IMS pledged to make tremendous efforts to promote the development of international meat trade, while urging countries to abolish non-tariff barrier that would impede trade.

Compared with 2005, China's large-scale meat enterprises in 2009 has achieved 127.9% growth in gross industrial output value, 129.1% growth in sales revenue and 97.2% growth in total assets, and has brought about 162.7% growth in total profits. Although China's meat industry lacks solid foundation and still falls short of the development targets outlined in the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan," the overall prospect for meat industry remains promising with much room for growth.

During the summit, CMA has submitted the outline of the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan' Chinese Meat Industry Development Strategies Report," which analysed and summed up the development of Chinese meat industry during the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan."

He Luli, the vice chairwoman of the 10th NPC Standing Committee and the honorary president of CMA, delivered an opening speech at the summit. Also present were leaders of the Ministry of Commerce, the Development and Reform Commission, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, as well as Li Shuilong, the president of CMA.
