Zimbabwe to export beef to Hong Kong

The Cold Storage Company, a state-owned meat processing company in Zimbabwe, announced Tuesday (Jul 2) it has started beef exports to Hong Kong, starting with a 6,500-tonne shipment.

Managing director Ngoni Chigaramombe said the company has beef orders from Hong Kong up to December.

The deal represents a major development for Zimbabwe's beef industry, whose beef production has plunged due to cattle diseases and the government's land redistribution policies which saw white farmers being driven off their land to resettle peasants.

Revenue from beef exports was only US$400,000 last year, compared to US$40 million before.

Besides the Hong Kong market, the country is also seeing increased orders from neighbouring countries such as Congo and Angola.
