Vietnam breaks into US market with pangasius exports

Pangasius exporters in Vietnam have gained broader access to the US market, as seven companies have been awarded a 0% tariff rate on frozen pangasius fillets.

This decision comes after the results of the 20th administrative review conducted by the US Department of Commerce.

After years of effort to ensure transparency in reporting and export pricing, these Vietnamese enterprises have met the US's stringent criteria to qualify for the 0% tariff and now have a golden opportunity to expand their presence in one of the world‘s most lucrative seafood markets.

Do Lap Nghiep, Deputy General Director of the Nam Viet Group, said: "This tariff rate is a great advantage for many businesses. Previously, only one or two companies could access the US market, which was almost exclusively a playing field for large firms."

As of early June, Vietnam's pangasius exports to the US have earned more than US$142 million, up 7% from last year. In the US, 1 kilogramme of frozen or portioned pangasius fillets sells for more than US$3, 30%-40% higher than prices in the Asian market. This price difference explains the intense competition among seafood processors to access and expand in the US market.

Vietnamese factories have already prepared inventory in anticipation of favourable trade conditions. The recent tax ruling is expected to spark a surge in exports.

Ho Van Mung, Chairman of the An Giang provincial People's Committee, said: "During the US Ambassador's recent visit to An Giang, we discussed this issue. The Ambassador promised his full support. Capitalizing on competitive advantages to boost pangasius exports will increase revenue for businesses and boost the incomes of local farmers."

The export momentum has already had a positive effect on the domestic market. Prices of raw pangasius have climbed to high levels, attracting strong demand as companies return to active purchasing. This rebound is a promising sign following a difficult period when the industry faced prolonged losses.
