US corn condition worsens amid heat waves across corn belt

Corn condition in the nation's top 18 corn-growing states continues to slowly decline, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Successful Farming reported.

For the week ending June 30, the latest USDA Crop Progress report showed only 67% of the corn crop was rated in good to excellent condition, marking the fourth consecutive week of decline.

The primary factor for the deterioration is the persistent heat, with heat waves affecting the Corn Belt, especially in the eastern regions. Pennsylvania, which was drought-free in April, now has 58% of the state experiencing abnormally dry conditions, as reported in the latest Drought Monitor report on July 2.

The National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Centre (CPC) forecasts average to above-average precipitation for much of the Corn Belt over the next two weeks. However, dry conditions are expected to persist in the Dakotas and northern Minnesota, the latter being one of only two Corn Belt states without any drought as of July 2.

Temperatures are predicted to remain above weekly averages across most regions. Texas is the only state anticipated to avoid a heat wave, potentially benefiting the western part of the state. Currently, 3% of Texas is experiencing level D3 extreme drought, primarily in the western region.

Later in July, a new heat wave is expected to further challenge the western Corn Belt. The latest CPC projection indicates that Colorado will face temperatures well above seasonal averages, with the eastern part of the state receiving below-average precipitation.

Alongside eastern Colorado, western Kansas, north Texas, and the Nebraska panhandle are also expected to receive less precipitation than usual. These areas are predicted to see low rainfall amounts over July, August, and September, including western Colorado. The state is experiencing drought conditions like April, with 32% classified as abnormally dry.

With 55% of corn and 40% of winter wheat in good to excellent condition, farmers are hoping for timely rainfall and cool nighttime temperatures to mitigate drought effects and maintain crop health.
