Chicken prices in Malaysia set at US$2.13 from July 1

The Malaysian government has announced the new chicken ceiling price capped at MYR 9.40 (~US$2.13; MYR 1 = US$0.23) per kg from July 1, up from the previous ceiling price of MR 8.90 (~US$2.02) per kg, Free Malaysia Today reported.

Ronald Kiandee, Malaysia's Agriculture and Food Industries Minister, also announced new ceiling prices for eggs. Grade A eggs will cost MYR 0.45 (~US$0.10) each, Grade B eggs at MYR 0.43 (~US$0.098) each, and Grade C eggs at MYR 0.41 (~US$0.093) each.

With this new ceiling price, according to Kiandee, Putrajaya will allocate about MYR 369.5 million (~US$83.8 million) for subsidies. He did not mention when the ceiling price will end.

He emphasised that global supply chain disruptions, climate change, and geopolitical conflicts were the causes of the rising prices of goods, not just in Malaysia.

Kiandee also said the government will do everything it can to set price control mechanisms to ensure that Malaysians are not burdened by the cost of living.

Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced increased cash aid for the public under the the Bantuan Keluarga Malaysia (BKM) programme, after certain subsidies were removed as well as the soaring price of goods.
