Smuggled shrimp fetches high prices in Bangladesh

Shrimp traders in the border areas between Bangladesh and Burma have been illegally exporting shrimp from Burma to Bangladesh, said a trader.

Prices offered for shrimps in Burma are much lower compared with those offered by its western neighbour Bangladesh.

Prices for high quality shrimp in Bangladesh can be as much as 60 percent higher than those in Burma while those for mid and low quality shrimps could be twice as much.

Since shrimp products are quite popular in the Arakan (Rakhine) State, the state closest to Bangladesh, many businessmen and local authorities are working to develop the local shrimp industry.
