Norway's Alotta announces launch of floating solar power system at Chilean salmon farm

Norwegian floating solar developer Alotta has announced the launch of a floating solar power system at a salmon farm in Chile.

The project was installed at seafood company Mowi's salmon farming site at Isla Huar in the Los Lagos region and will help reduce diesel use and operational emissions.

Hailed as a first for Chile, the hybrid energy solution will generate solar power on the surface of the sea and will be coupled with integrated battery storage that ensures continuous operation.

According to Alotta, about 50% of the salmon farm's energy needs will now be covered by the floating solar system.

Kari-Elin Hildre, chief executive officer of Alotta Energy Chile, said: "This is a moment of deep pride. The Alotta Circle is no longer just a Norwegian solution — it's now part of Chile's clean energy future. We've delivered a robust, proven system that's ready to replace diesel, even in demanding offshore conditions. And today, it's real – it works in places where diesel used to rule."

The project was delivered in collaboration with Mowi Chile, AKVA group, and Fjord Maritime.

AKVA group provided the cage infrastructure, integration, operations, and maintenance, while Fjord Maritime delivered the energy storage.

Mowi Chile purchases the green power directly from Alotta, who installs, owns, and maintains the floating solar system.

Alotta's solar hybrid solution uses Ocean Sun's patented floating solar technology. It integrates solar power with existing energy systems, such as diesel generators or battery storage, to provide reliable power even in challenging weather conditions.

The system has been designed for maritime environments and tailored for the aquaculture industry and other coastal or near-shore locations. This hybrid system optimises solar energy production, allowing for the reduction of fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

Jan Erik Våge Klepp, business development executive at Alotta, said: "Seeing the Alotta Circle float in Chile is incredibly rewarding. I've met outstanding people and companies here — all eager to move aquaculture in a greener direction. This is just the beginning."
