Mitsubishi and Maruha Nichiro to establish joint venture in salmon production in Japan
Mitsubishi Corporation and Maruha Nichiro Corporation have announced an agreement to establish a new joint venture company, ATLAND Corporation (ATLAND), that will specialise in the land-based production of salmon in Japan
ATLAND will be established in Nyuzen town of Toyama prefecture, Japan, in around October 2022.
The investment ratio of ATLAND will be 51% from Mitsubishi and 49% from Maruha Nichiro. Following the establishment of the company, a land-based aquaculture facility with a capacity of 2,500 tonnes (live weight equivalent) will be constructed in Nyuzen town, with the aim of starting operations in 2025 and completing its first delivery in 2027.
Mitsubishi and Maruha Nichiro have been discussing the joint promotion of the project since March 2021. The project is expected to help develop a sustainable and stable land-based production system.
Both companies are dedicated to leveraging their strengths and businesses to simultaneously generate economic, environmental and societal value, Mitsubishi said. The new facility will use recirculating aquaculture systems and take advantage of artificial intelligence and Internet of Things to optimise salmon farming operations.
Additionally, the facility uses ground water originating from the Kurobe River and deep seawater from the Toyama bay.
