Feedgrains vs. biofuels: The big adjustment
With 27 percent of America's corn harvest and most of Europe's former rapeseed exports being turned into petrol, Asia's livestock sector is forced to compete against the powerful energy industry for scarce grain supplies. Although dried distilled grains with solubles (DDGS) will eventually recycle some ethanol back to feed suppliers, Asia's livestock sector is struggling to accommodate this brave new reality.

MARKET
Philippine chicken exports: Making headway
Free of bird flu and with exports up by 49 percent over last year, the Philippines is poised to become a major
exporter of chickens.
Vietnam's dairy industry: Towards a better breed
Though only 22 percent of Vietnam's dairy demand is met by domestic suppliers, this proportion has nearly
tripled from a mere 8 percent in 2001. Although domestic self-sufficiency remains a long way off, the rapid
upgrading of Vietnam's dairy infrastructure is enabling quantum leaps in milk output, productivity and quality
control.
Managing the menace of mycotoxins
A perennial scourge of the livestock feed industry, research shows that different mycotoxins infect each of
Asia's major geographic regions. We examine the latest research findings about which crops best resist
specific mycotoxins and the strategies used to control their occurrence.
LeanBACK: The evolving role of DDGS
In response to rising ethanol production, feed nutritionists keep increasing the usage limits of dried distilled
grains with solubles (DDGS) while revising their estimated nutritional value. To better understand the
opportunities, challenges and issues of using DDGS in animal feed, FBA interviewed Park Waldroup from the
University of Arkansas and Budi Tangendjaja, the US Grains Council's feed expert in Indonesia.
CHINA
Responding to sky-high pork prices, China's government released emergency stocks of live hogs and pork.
Subsidies were introduced to encourage hog rearing and measures taken to reserve scarce corn supplies for
the manufacturing of hog feed. Despite all these measures, low piglet replenishment rates means that live
hog inventories will not sufficiently recover before the end of this year.
Perspective: Rapeseed - A smaller harvest is expected
With fewer farmers planting rapeseed, this year's harvest is expected to fall more than 20 percent below its
2001-2006 average. As rising demand from aqua feed manufacturers coincides with the drying up of
European and Australian rapeseed exports, how will the projected supply shortfall be met?
Perspective: Soymeal - Plentiful supply and demand
Rising livestock production is boosting demand but soybean supplies are plentiful and growing too. At the
same time, high CBOT prices and rising transport costs are ensuring that soymeal prices stay firm.
INDUSTRY
Agrigiants, Part 1: Nutreco
Despite the Netherlands' tiny geographic size and small population, the Dutch stand tall in the feed and
agribusiness industry. In this first of two parts, FBA visited Nutreco's feed and swine research facilities and its
Hendrix UTD subsidiary's feed mill to learn the dynamics of this company's competitive advantage.
Made in Thailand enzymes
Thailand currently imports almost all of its enzymes but this will soon change. Within two years, government
support, in-house research, and collaborative ventures with established giants such as BASF will spawn the
first generation of Thailand's domestically produced enzymes.
Famous for its near monopoly status in Thailand's chicken market, Charoen Pokphand Foods (zCPF) is
expanding beyond its stronghold in the Thai poultry sector. With its entry into Thailand's hog sector, foray into
processed foods and a string of aquaculture acquisitions in the Philippines and Indonesia, CPF is transforming
its business model.
US-based Alpharma makes a new foray into China, Provimi acquires additional foreign subsidiaries while
Kemin introduces an aqua feed antioxidant.
Pancosma, Hybro, DSM, Hubbard and Merial all announce changes to their executive line-up.
Clextral introduces a new aqua feed pellet maker, Munch announces a dryer/cooler while Feed Management
Systems introduces the latest version of Brill Formulation, version 2.0.
AnimalNUTRITION
With antibiotics losing their ability to prevent serious E. coli intestinal infections in hogs, a new solution is
badly needed. This report shows why an acidifier-based approach holds promise for controlling the incidence
of this serious pig disease.
FeedOPERATIONS
Since their introduction in the early 20th century, the livestock sector has depended on ring die pelleters for
the manufacture of animal feed. Rolf J. Koller explains the history, innovations and techniques that maximise
the effectiveness of this vital feed making machinery.
FeedEVENTS

Biofuels and their recycling into DDGS was the keynote of the recent American Soybean Association's
International Marketing (ASAIM) conference in Bali. We review the issues covered, solutions and forecasts
made at this key meeting.
