US National Pork Board partners with universities to build consumer trust in pork industry

The US National Pork Board (NPB) has partnered with five universities to launch a new five-year programme called The Real Pork Trust Consortium, aimed at enhancing consumers' confidence in the pork industry, Meat + Poultry reported.

NPB, along with the five universities, namely Iowa State University, University of Georgia, North Carolina State University, North Carolina A&T State University, and University of Minnesota, will collaborate to address consumer inquiries related to NPB's We Care ethical principles.

Bob Ruth, president of NPB, said that the producer-leaders of the National Pork Board recognise the need to engage with consumers to make sure the industry understands their questions, and they understand more about the industry's commitment to people, swine, and the planet.

The primary focus of the consortium is to provide well-researched and relatable responses to consumers' questions regarding the pork industry. Additionally, the programme aims to train individuals who can effectively communicate this information to others.

Nicholas Gabler, a professor of animal science at Iowa State and the lead investigator of the consortium, highlighted the collaborative benefits of working across campuses and universities.

Gabler said this is an exciting project with a common goal of communication to producers, consumers, and other stakeholders to enhance knowledge and confidence in pork production, pork's role in protein nutrition, and the industries' contributions to society.

The participating universities boast leading experts in various fields, including science communication, animal science, animal welfare, veterinary medicine, meat science and product safety, nutrition, agricultural economics, sustainability, sociology, and agricultural education. Their collective expertise ensures a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to addressing consumer concerns.

Currently in the planning phase, the consortium, in collaboration with NPB, will unveil further details about its approach in the coming fall.
