Amul to establish milk processing plants in US and Europe

India-based Amul Dairy, operated by the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers' Union (GCMMF), is planning to invest INR350 million (US$7.79 million) to set up processing facilities in the US and Europe.

The dairy co-operative will finalise the exact location for the first plant within a month, with a delegation travelling to the US.

The union plans to set up facilities to manufacture 10 tonnes of ghee (butter oil) and five tonnes of paneer (cottage cheese) a day, and is also considering purchasing an existing plant to manufacture the products.

Amul Dairy's managing director Rahul Kumar said that the four million Indians and six million Asians in the US have unrealised market potential for Amul.

Following the stabilisation of its operations in the US, Amul Dairy plans to develop a similar product portfolio for the European market.

Amul Dairy had a turnover of INR21 billion (US$468 million) in 2010, and runs six manufacturing plants across India.
