400 Dairy Cattle To Boost Malaysia's Milk Supply

Malaysian state Sabah, presently the main producer of fresh milk in the country with 90 per cent self-sufficiency, is expected to increase annual production to 6.5 million litres next year from the present 5.8 million litres.

The confidence is based on the arrival of 400 expectant dairy cows from New Zealand on Sunday.

Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry, Datuk Abdul Rahim Ismail, said the latest batch would increase the birth of dairy calves to 3,200 and, thus, increase annual milk production by a million litres.

He had earlier witnessed the arrival of the imported expectant dairy cows, valued about RM2.1 million, at Kota Kinabalu Port here.

The consignment was imported through Department of Veterinary Services and Animal Industry (Dovsai) Sabah from Wrightson Export company in New Zealand. It is meant for distribution among participants under Dovsai's Dairy Cows Project at a ceremony scheduled for August.

The project is part of the Ministry's efforts, through Dovsai Sabah, to boost the local food production sector in line with its policies and direction (halatuju) of development.

Dovsai Sabah Director, Haji Awang Sahak Salleh, and other department officials were also present.
