Mondelez and FrieslandCampina collaborate to reduce emissions in dairy supply chain

Mondelez International and FrieslandCampina have joined forces in a four-year agreement aimed at decreasing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with milk supplied by FrieslandCampina's member dairy farmers, Food Infotech reported.
The objective is to achieve a reduction of approximately 14% in emissions by 2025, compared to the levels in 2019.
Sanne Griffioen-Roose, director farm sustainability at FrieslandCampina, said that they are working towards producing net climate-neutral dairy by 2050.
Griffioen-Roose said they are excited to partner with Mondelēz International because they can acknowledge their farmers' hard work in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and invest in programmes that continually enhance sustainability on the farms.
Vanessa Harrer, senior director marketing and sustainability at Mondelez Europe, said that they are proud to invest in a strong partnership in Europe to work closely with dairy supplier FrieslandCampina, encouraging and supporting their initiatives to measure greenhouse gas reductions and take action to reduce, track, and report carbon emissions.
The collaboration not only aims to accelerate ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the dairy supply chain but also intends to inspire other companies to participate and share best practices.
Dairy farmers have various options to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. Implementing good agricultural practices, such as minimising waste in the feed cycle, reducing soil tillage, and utilizing local protein sources, are potential strategies for emission reduction.
FrieslandCampina's member dairy farmers also have the opportunity to generate renewable energy on their farms, which can be subsequently used at FrieslandCampina's production sites.
FrieslandCampina utilizes the Annual Nutrient Cycling Assessment, a monitoring tool employed by nearly 10,000 member dairy farms, to track progress resulting from sustainable farming practices. This tool provides farm-specific insights, including the carbon footprint size and biodiversity indicators.
Through the Foqus planet Sustainable development programme, member dairy farmers receive financial premiums based on their performance in areas such as climate impact, biodiversity, pasture grazing, animal health, and animal welfare. Members are informed in advance about the financial benefits associated with specific sustainability achievements on their farms.
