Canadian giant Cooke Aquaculture enters salmon farming market in Australia
Major Canadian fish farmer Cooke Aquaculture is entering the Australian salmon farming market, following its 5.4% stake purchase (11.6 million shares) in Tasmania-based Tassal Group, Fish Information & Services reported.
The purchase was confirmed by Joel Richardson, vice president of public relations at Cooke.
The Tassal Group has 40,000 tonnes of salmon production capacity and has expanded into shrimp farming.
Salmon farming operations run by the 105,000-tonne Cooke Aquaculture already exist in Nicaragua, Chile, and Canada.
Cooke Aquaculture has a 105,000-tonne salmon production capacity in Canada, Chile, and Scotland. The company also has a shrimp farming business in Nicaragua.
Based on takeover rumours, Tassal shares have increased significantly over the last week. The company gained 3.1%, reaching its highest level in two years.
