China's dairy production increased by 2.9% in May

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said major dairy companies in the country saw their output increase by 2.9% year-on-year in May 2022, reversing the downward trend seen in April, Xinhua News Agency reported.

According to data from the ministry, these companies produced about 2.76 million tonnes of dairy products last month, each with an operating revenue of at least CNY 20 million (~US$2.99 million; CNY 1 = US$0.15).

The dairy output of these companies increased by 0.9% from January to May to almost 12.43 million tonnes, growing at a faster rate than the 0.5% annual growth in the first four months of the year.

Yang Zhenni, a researcher at an institute under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, said household dairy consumption in China has increased over the last two years, with per capita consumption rising 11.8% annually to 42.3kg in 2021.

Yang said the nation's production of dairy goods is anticipated to reach nearly 54 million tonnes in 2031.
