Chile-China trade agreements to permit meat product entry

Chilean President Sebastián Piñera and Chinese premier, Wen Jiabao have signed agreements which will permit the entry of beef, sheep and goat meat imports into the Asian market.

President Piñera said China has now become Chile's main trading partner, worth US$30 billion dollars last year - almost three times the trade of three years ago.

The president also stressed that in the 11 agreements signed, six are related to forestry and agriculture.

"Chile already has an agricultural experimental farm in China, and with this agreement, China will also have a farm in our nation," the president said.

"Additionally, we have signed agreements for facilitating trade and Chilean agricultural exports to China, which represent potential for growth and development for our agriculture."

Agriculture Minister Luis Mayol said, "These agreements allow the entry of beef, sheep and goats to the Chinese market and strengthen agricultural trade between the two nations."
