EU Commission Approves Genetically Modified Type Of Corn
The European Union Commission Friday approved Monsanto Co.'s application to market a genetically modified type of corn, and recommended that member governments do the same.
The corn has "undergone a thorough safety assessment for any adverse impact on public health," the Commission said. Proper steps have been taken "to allow labeling and traceability."
The regulator now will send its proposal to the governments, which have three months to make a decision.
The corn, known as NK603, has been genetically modified to be resistant to Monsanto's RoundUp herbicide. This means that when a field of crops is sprayed with RoundUp, the corn will be the only plant to survive.
