ASF vaccine approval to aid swine repopulation in the Philippines

The Department of Agriculture (DA) in the Philippines announced that the approval of a vaccine for African swine fever (ASF) will play a crucial role in replenishing the number of swine raised across various regions in the country, ABS-CBN reported.

The country's Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) had previously recommended a Vietnamese-manufactured vaccine for approval by the Food and Drug Administration.

Arnel de Mesa, DA Assistant Secretary for Operations, noted that despite the vaccine's approval, the country will still need to import pork. But the development of the vaccine program is expected to facilitate the continuation of the repopulation initiative. Based on available data, there is a reduced need for pork imports compared to last year.

Arlene Vytiaco, BAI Assistant Director, clarified that once approved, the ASF vaccine will be available in different packaging options. There will be packs containing 5 and 10 doses for small backyard farmers, as well as a 50-dose package for commercial growers.

Vytiaco addressed rumors regarding the adequacy of vaccine procurement for the country's swine population, stating that not all swine can be vaccinated. The vaccination process has specific guidelines and requirements, and it may not be feasible or necessary to vaccinate every single swine.
