Malaysian assemblyman proposes feed rebates for chicken farmers

Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, a Malaysian assemblyman for Bintulu in Sarawak state, Malaysia, has urged the government to consider a proposal for chicken farmers to apply for refunds and subsidies based on chicken feed supplier purchase documents, Borneo Post reported.

He said farmers' rising operating expenses could be mitigated with this proposal.

Tiong said the high and unstable prices of chicken feed are the primary reason for the shortage of chickens and eggs, so when farmers can only apply for subsidies at the very end of the supply chain, it is difficult for them to survive until their poultry is grown and ready for sale.

He said more than 40 large, medium, and small farms in Malaysia had shut down because of losses.

He also said the government does not have a thorough understanding of the entire food production chain system to address the issue of the supply shortage of chicken and eggs.

Tiong, the special representative of the Prime Minister to China, asserted that a summit of world leaders is necessary to address the issue of inflation.

He said the consumer price index (CPI) increased by 2.4% in the first five months of the year, and the inflation rate increased to 2.8% in May. Social media makes it clear that people are complaining about the rising cost of living, the weight of their debt, and the pressure this is putting on them.
