China grants export rights to 14 Brazilian chicken meat packers

China showed more signs it is interested in Brazil's chicken exports by granting 14 chicken meat packers rights to ship to China, the Brazilian Agriculture Ministry said Monday (Jun 26).

The new units are added to the 10 already granted permission to export chicken to China.

Chinese animal health inspectors visited meat packing facilities in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Parana states in early March before deciding to do business with chicken processing plants in those states, as well as Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul and Goias.

Chicken does not register on the list of the top 100 items Brazil ships to China, according to Brazil's Foreign Trade Ministry.

Brazil is the world's leading chicken exporter. China took similar sanitary measures in favour of some beef packing facilities earlier this year, yet is not an importer of Brazilian beef.

Brazil's chicken and beef industries have said that China's certifying of those facilities opens the doors to future trade. China is Brazil's third-largest agricultural export market, trailing the European Union and the US, according to Brazil's Agriculture Ministry.
