Vietnam's Dong Nai culls over 1,900 pigs after African swine fever confirmed at contract farm

The outbreak at a household-operated contract facility in Tan Phu Ward was linked to an open housing system that allowed insect exposure, with authorities warning the disease situation may remain complicated in coming months.
Authorities in Dong Nai province, Vietnam, have destroyed a herd of more than 1,900 market pigs after African swine fever was confirmed at a contract farming facility in Tan Phu Ward, following a positive test result from the National Center for Veterinary Diagnosis and Testing No. 2.
The outbreak was detected during an inspection on 16 June, when 27 pig deaths were recorded and 355 animals were displaying symptoms consistent with the disease. Preliminary investigations suggest the farm's open housing system, which allowed exposure to insects including flies and mosquitoes, may have contributed to transmission.
Nguyen Van Thang, Deputy Director of the Dong Nai Department of Agriculture and Environment, warned the disease situation could remain complicated in coming months and directed local authorities to complete outbreak reporting, intensify disinfection of affected areas using lime and chemical disinfectants, and monitor burial sites and nearby water sources. Authorities also instructed local governments to strengthen oversight of livestock farming, transport and trading of animal products of unknown origin.
