Negros Occidental, Philippines records poultry deaths due to Mt Kanlaon eruption

The Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) in Negros Occidental, Philippines, reported 3,421 animal deaths, mostly poultry in two localities following the eruption of Mt. Kanlaon on June 3, 2024, Philippine News Agency reported.

As of June 19, a total of 3,210 poultry or chickens were affected in the cities of Bago and La Carlota.

"This is due to ashfall," said Dr Ryan Janoya, PVO Officer-in-Charge and provincial veterinarian.

Janoya noted that the effects of the volcanic eruption on animals became apparent two weeks later when respiratory problems and other diseases were observed in areas affected by ashfall and sulphurous odour.

In Bago City, animal mortalities included 72 swine, 16 cattle, 45 carabao, and 73 goats or sheep.

The PVO report estimated the value of the 3,421 animal mortalities at PHP 374,200 (US$6,300).

To help animals recover from the volcanic eruption, the PVO has been conducting medical missions in affected areas.

"We distributed veterinary drugs and provided treatment, especially in the upper village of Cabagna-an, where we found cattle and carabao with burns caused by debris from the volcano," Janoya added.

Following the eruption, the PVO provided veterinary drugs to the La Castellana municipal government.

The PVO also mobilised district veterinarians, livestock technicians, and para-veterinarians to offer technical assistance to affected animal raisers.
