South Africa's maize crop to increase 38% in 2019 / 2020 season

According to a Reuters survey, maize farmers in South Africa are expected to harvest 38% more maize in the current 2019 / 2020 season compared to the season prior thanks to favourable weather conditions, Nasdaq reported.

The South Africa Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) said maize production is projected to hit 15.574 million tonnes. This is an increase of 11.275 million when compared to 2018 / 2019 season harvests that was hit by dry weather.

The estimate for the current 2019 / 2020 is lower than the forecasted 15.589 million tonnes back in May. Estimates have ranged between 15.3 million to 15.72 million tonnes.

From the projected amount, 9.182 million tonnes are white maize and 6.394 million tonnes are yellow maize.
