India to receive World Bank funding for pig farms

The World Bank will fund a pilot project in Kokrajhar district located in Indian state of Assam, assisting 50 self-help groups to set up pig farms, according to The Telegraph.

Each of the 50 groups would be given 10 piglets and enough fodder for one year.

If the project is successful in two years' time, the World Bank will help to establish a major pig farm in the district with a capacity of over 100 pigs, said Mrinal Das, joint director of animal husbandry and veterinary department.

A pig farmers' association would be formed to take care of the farms. The project will commence in three months and first priority would be given to women self-help

A Kokrajhar-based non-governmental organisation, the Discovery Club, will assist the department in the project.
