Mountain Province, Philippines hog raisers receive capability development training on artificial insemination for swine

Several hog raisers from Mountain Province, the Philippines, were recipients of a two-day capability development training on artificial insemination (AI) for swine, which was spearheaded by the Provincial Government through the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO), held in the capital town from June 9-10.
The training brought together local hog raisers, private feed technicians, and other stakeholders to enhance their knowledge and practical skills in swine artificial insemination. This technology improves breeding efficiency, genetic quality, and productivity in pig farming.
During the opening programme, Executive Assistant Rolando B. Bragado, representing Gov. Bonifacio C. Lacwasan, Jr., said that at the end of training, the participants are expected to be equipped with technical skills in semen collection, processing, and insemination to improve hog genetics and reproductive efficiency.
Throughout the training, participants were introduced to the principles and techniques of artificial insemination, including catheter insertion, semen extraction and processing, proper breeding procedures, feeding systems, and swine biosecurity. The sessions aimed to equip attendees with the necessary competencies to adopt modern and sustainable swine production methods in their respective communities.
The resource persons during the two-day activity were agriculturist Mario T. Sildon and veterinarian Kimjay L. Dalasen, both from the PVO.
As part of the culminating activity, participants visited the PVO's swine facilities. The farm visit provided an opportunity for hands-on learning and direct observation of the extraction and processing of semen, as well as artificial insemination practices, allowing trainees to apply the knowledge gained during the lectures and demonstrations.
During the closing ceremony, PVO Assistant Department Head Josephine A. Dao-an said that the successful completion of the training reflects the continued commitment of the local government and the agricultural sector to strengthen livestock production and support the development of a more productive and resilient swine industry in Mountain Province.
Meanwhile, participants expressed their appreciation to the provincial government for the valuable learning experience. They emphasised their intention to apply the skills and knowledge acquired to improve swine production in their respective areas.
