Vietnam's shrimp exports to Canada rise 32% during early 2020 to first half of May

Vietnam's shrimp exports to Canada rose 32% to US$54.7 million year-on-year from the start of 2020 to the first half of May, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

Following a downturn in January, exports picked up in the following months, achieving a positive double-digit growth. Canada now becomes the sixth-largest importer of Vietnamese shrimp, accounting for 5.7% of the country's total shrimp exports to foreign markets.

During the four-month period, Vietnam's shrimp exports to Canada increased 31.2% to US$49.4 million against last year's corresponding period, with April's exports alone increasing by approximately 51% to over US$13 million.

50% of seafood products imported by Canada were reported to consist of shrimp. The trend of buying shrimp for home processing of Canadian households is also rising.

In addition to Vietnam, the country's other major shrimp suppliers are  India, Thailand, China and Ecuador.
