Japan May Drop Ban On U.S. Beef Imports

Japan, once the biggest importer of U.S. beef, may end its mad cow-linked ban by the end of the year, U.S. Ambassador to Japan Howard Baker said in a statement.

Baker met with Yoshiyuki Kamei, Japan's minister of agriculture, forestry and fisheries on Wednesday, to urge an early end to the ban on U.S. beef, in effect since December.

Talks are to resume Monday in Fort Collins on test procedures and rules.

Japan halted imports of U.S. beef after a case of mad cow disease was found in a Canadian-born cow in Washington state. Japan previously insisted all 35 million cattle the U.S. slaughters a year should be tested before imports resume.
