Vietnam's egg prices edge up after herd reductions but farmers remain loss-making on high feed costs

Farm-gate egg prices in southern Vietnam have recovered VND300-400 per egg from June lows, but remain well below production costs as feed prices stay elevated.
Farm-gate prices for commercial eggs in southern Vietnam have risen to VND1,500-1,700 per egg, up VND300-400 from lows recorded in early June, as prolonged losses forced many laying hen farmers to reduce flocks or suspend operations, tightening supply.
Despite the recovery, prices remain well below last year's peak of VND2,800 per egg and below current production costs. The Dong Nai Livestock Association said feed costs have risen more than VND1,000 per kilogramme since the start of the year, pushing production costs to around VND1,600 per egg, meaning most farmers are still operating at a loss or close to breakeven. The association said prices are likely to continue rising given the current supply tightening trend.
At retail level, commercial eggs are selling at VND24,000-34,000 per dozen at supermarkets and shops in Ho Chi Minh City, and VND22,000-28,000 per dozen at traditional markets, depending on grade.
