EFL AG-DATA: China threonine prices slide as weak feed demand outweighs export growth

China's threonine market remained under pressure in late May and early June 2026, with prices continuing to weaken amid subdued demand from the livestock feed sector and ample product availability.

Export prices declined from US$1.06/kg in the week ended May 29 to US$1.03/kg by June 12, reflecting a further erosion in market sentiment. Domestic transaction prices also fell, slipping from ¥7.18/kg (US$1.00/kg) to ¥6.96/kg (US$0.97/kg) over the same period. The price decline highlights ongoing competition among producers seeking to secure sales in a weak demand environment.

Market fundamentals remain challenging. Demand from feed manufacturers has been constrained by a sluggish hog sector, limiting purchasing activity and reducing the industry's ability to absorb available supplies. As a result, producers have faced increasing pressure to offer more competitive prices to move inventory.

Despite the weak domestic market, China's export performance has remained relatively resilient. Exports of threonine reached 259,000 tonnes during January–April 2026, up 5.5% from the corresponding period in 2025. April exports of amino-alcohol-phenols totalled 69,000 tonnes, representing a 10% year-on-year increase, although volumes were down 3.1% month-on-month. The export growth suggests that overseas demand continues to provide some support for the industry, partially offsetting softer domestic consumption.

Looking ahead, the threonine market is expected to remain weak. Prices are already approximately 18% lower than a year earlier, yet sluggish feed demand and adequate supply levels continue to weigh on market recovery prospects.

Unless livestock production margins improve and feed consumption strengthens, threonine prices are likely to remain under downward pressure in the near term.

China Threonine: Lacklustre demand weakens prices (week ended May 29, 2026)

Weak demand dragged down threonine prices as producers competed aggressively to secure sales.

In April 2026, China exported 69,000 tonnes of amino-alcohol-phenols, down 3.1% month-on-month but 10% higher than a year earlier. Between January and April 2026, China exported 259,000 tonnes of threonine, an increase of 5.5% compared with the same period in 2025.

Export prices of threonine fell to US$1.06/kg.

China Threonine: Prices move lower (week ended June 12, 2026)

Threonine demand remained weak, putting downward pressure on prices amid ample product availability.

Export prices of threonine decreased to US$1.03/kg.

Transaction prices for domestic threonine products fell to ¥6.96/kg (US$0.97/kg).

The threonine market is expected to remain weak, even though prices are 18% lower year-on-year, as demand from the livestock feed sector remains sluggish.

Transaction prices for domestic threonine products dropped to ¥7.18/kg (US$1.00/kg).

Weak sales, resulting from a sluggish hog market, are expected to continue exerting pressure on threonine prices.
