4,000 swine farmers in Negros Oriental, Philippines receive financial aid for ASF losses
4,000 swine farmers in Negros Oriental, Philippines, who were affected by the African swine fever (ASF) have received financial assistance from the provincial government, an official announced, Philippine News Agency reported.
The Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) facilitated the disbursement based on a verified list of affected farmers submitted by local government units (LGUs).
Jaymar Vilos, PVO information officer-designate, said the provincial government has disbursed PHP 22 million (US$374,000) in cash or checks to beneficiaries from various municipalities and cities based on the official lists.
Each beneficiary is entitled to PHP 3,000 (US$51) for every head of swine lost to ASF, with a maximum compensation of PHP 15,000 (US$255) for up to five heads either dead or culled due to the disease.
The beneficiaries hail from Basay, Zamboanguita, Dauin, Valencia, Dumaguete City, Sibulan, Amlan, Tanjay City, Pamplona, Bais City, Manjuyod, Bindoy, Ayungon, and Vallehermoso.
The total number of hogs lost to ASF in Negros Oriental since last year remains undetermined, as some affected areas did not report their losses.
The provincial government allocated a PHP 30 million (US$510,000) budget for ASF claims last year, as mandated by law, to help farmers recover their losses.
