Vietnam's Hanoi shuts 273 small slaughterhouses as city pushes toward industrial-scale meat processing

The city plans 27 centralised industrial facilities and four to six large processing complexes along its main development axes, with BAF Vietnam surveying a site for a large-scale export-oriented complex.
Hanoi has closed 273 small-scale slaughterhouses since the start of 2026 as part of a broader push to modernise livestock and poultry slaughter infrastructure across the city, which processes an estimated 1,000-1,100 tonnes of animal products daily.
According to the city's Quality and Market Development Department, approximately 80,000 poultry, 5,000 pigs and 150 buffaloes and cattle are slaughtered daily under official supervision, accounting for around 65% of total slaughter output. The remainder is processed at smaller, independent facilities that authorities acknowledge are difficult to regulate for food safety and disease control.
A total of 428 animal slaughter facilities currently remain in operation across the city, comprising nine industrial slaughterhouses, 26 semi-industrial facilities and 393 small-scale temporary operations. The Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment is accelerating the closure of non-compliant small-scale facilities while establishing a network of 27 centralised industrial slaughter sites and controlled temporary slaughter and transfer points.
Ta Van Tuong, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment, said the department is also planning four to six industrial slaughtering complexes linked to deep processing along the city's four development axes. He said the department is coordinating with BAF Vietnam Agricultural Joint Stock Company to survey and research investment in a large-scale industrial slaughterhouse and deep processing complex in Binh Minh commune, with the facility intended to meet domestic standards and target export.
Authorities said the longer-term objective is to gradually shift consumer habits from fresh to chilled and processed meat meeting international standards, supported by investment in automated slaughter lines, cold storage and traceability systems.
