Indonesia's SIG turns coconut beach waste into poultry feed ingredient, cutting costs 60% in Aceh

The Sakeladera programme processes around 60 tonnes of coconut waste per month into cocopeat as a feed mixture, reducing local poultry farmers' monthly feed costs by approximately IDR28.2 million.

PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SIG), through its business unit PT Solusi Bangun Andalas, has converted coconut waste from the Lampuuk Beach tourism area in Aceh into cocopeat for use as a poultry feed mixture, reducing feed costs for local farmers by 60% and cutting monthly carbon emissions from waste burning by up to 34.8 tonnes of CO₂.

The Sakeladera programme was initiated in 2024 in response to approximately 60 tonnes of coconut waste generated monthly by tourism activities at Lampuuk Beach, which had previously been left to rot or burned. Local poultry farmers in the area had faced high feed costs of up to IDR48 million (approximately US$1,880) per month due to dependence on feed supplies from outside the region.

Under the programme, coconut waste is collected, sorted and processed into cocopeat - a fine powder derived from coconut shells - which has passed laboratory testing by the Industrial Research and Standardisation Centre for calcium and protein content, and is used as a feed mixture for local poultry groups. Waste volumes have been reduced to 20-24 tonnes per month from the previous 60 tonnes, while feed costs for participating poultry groups have been cut by around IDR28.2 million (approximately US$1,100) per month.

The programme involves 28 community members across the supply chain, from beach waste collection and sorting to cocopeat processing and distribution. SIG said the initiative has delivered a Social Return on Investment ratio of 2.5, meaning every IDR1 invested generates IDR2.5 in community benefits.
