Decline in meat and dairy consumption in Finland

Preliminary statistics released by Natural Resources Institute Finland showed that the country experienced a decline in the consumption of meat and dairy products in 2022, indicating a shift in dietary preferences, Icenews reported.
The data from Natural Resources Institute Finland revealed that meat consumption decreased by approximately 2% compared to the previous year, averaging at 77 kg per capita in the country.
Pork emerged as the most popular choice of meat, accounting for 37.2% of the total per capita, followed by chicken at 36.6%, and beef and veal at 22.5%. Notably, the consumption of red meat experienced an 8% decline in 2022.
Erja Mikkola, senior specialist at Natural Resources Institute Finland, said that the decline in meat consumption can be attributed to a combination of health and environmental concerns as well as price increases.
Mikkola also acknowledged the influence of dietary recommendations, adding that dietary recommendations have also had an impact.
Mikkola said people have been seeking more affordable options within meat products, which may have led to a higher demand for pork products.
