US beef exports lower than expected despite year-on-year increase


US beef exports in April showed a 45 percent year-on-year increase from 33 million pounds to 48 million pounds. However, that was still below the tonnage exported last November.


US beef exports to Canada in April were up nearly 4 million pounds, while Mexico and Korea were up 35 and 18 percent respectively.


US beef imports and veal hit 340.7 million pounds in April, nearly an 11 percent year-on-year increase and the largest monthly tonnage so far this year. April imports from Canada were up 18 percent and Mexico at 13 percent. 


Meanwhile, US pork exports in April peaked at 252.1 million pounds, a year-on-year increase of 34 percent and double the prior five-year average tonnage level.


US broiler exports in April reached 469.6 million pounds, a year-on-year increase of 46 percent and 29 percent higher than the prior five-year average.
