Vietnam's Cam Pha cooperative achieves 7-9 harvests a year with covered high-tech shrimp ponds

The Quang Ninh-based operation reported over 300 tonnes of shrimp output in the first half of the year, using closed-loop, climate-resilient production technology.

The Cam Pha High-Tech Shrimp Farming Cooperative in Quang Ninh province, Vietnam, has reported shrimp harvests of over 300 tonnes in the first six months of this year, using a covered, closed-loop farming system that enables 7 to 9 harvest cycles annually.

The cooperative operates across nearly 8 hectares in Hai Hoa commune, with 12 ponds housed in covered structures spanning a 2-hectare greenhouse and a water supply and drainage system covering more than 5 hectares. The facility uses a three-stage farming technology, taking around 90 days to grow shrimp from seedling to a marketable size of approximately 30 shrimp per kilogramme. A single 1,000-square-metre commercial pond, built from cement, represents an investment of approximately VND4.6 billion (approximately US$180,400).

Each 1,000-square-metre commercial pond yields over 30 tonnes per harvest, according to the cooperative. The covered system allows year-round production independent of seasonal conditions, compared with traditional outdoor farming methods that typically yield only one to two harvests annually.

Duong Thi Lieu, a representative of the cooperative, said each 1,000-square-metre pond requires treatment of 300-400 cubic metres of wastewater per cycle. Wastewater is channelled through a system of manholes to a settling area for two to three days before being treated using biological methods, including lime and microbial preparations, prior to environmental discharge.

Dang Ba Manh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the cooperative, said the covered structures help mitigate the impact of extreme weather events such as prolonged heatwaves and sudden heavy rainfall, which can otherwise alter salinity, pH and alkalinity levels and directly affect shrimp development. He said the cooperative's production has remained stable through extreme weather periods as a result of close environmental control.
