US milk production fell in May 2022

 

 

US milk production in May was down on the year with a smaller herd canceling out a rise in average yield.

 

The United States Department of Agriculture said milk production in the top 24 US dairy states was 18.841 billion pounds, 0.6% less than in May 2021. The average yield was 2,114 pounds per cow, eight pounds above last year, with a dairy herd of 8.912 million head, a decrease of 84,000 head.

 

California claimed the top slots for production and yield, followed by Wisconsin, while Michigan had the largest herd.

 

Milk productions in some US states are as followed:

 

    - Illinois: Production - 154 million pounds, down 1.9% from May 2021; yield - 1,930 pounds per cow, 40 more than a year ago; herd - 80,000 head, 3,000 lower than last year;

 

    - Indiana: Production - 385 million pounds, down 4.2% from May 2021; yield - 2,060 pounds per cow, 10 more than a year ago; herd - 187,000 head, 9,000 lower than last year;

 

    - Iowa: Production - 493 million pounds, up 3.1% from May 2021; yield - 2,125 pounds per cow, 30 more than a year ago; herd - 232,000 head, 4,000 higher than last year;

 

    - Kansas: Production - 356 million pounds, down 0.3% from May 2021; yield - 2,070 pounds per cow, 30 more than a year ago; herd - 172,000 head, 3,000 lower than last year;

 

    - Michigan: Production - 1.021 billion pounds, down 1.7% from May 2021; yield - 2,390 pounds per cow, 55 pounds more than a year ago; herd - 427,000 head, 18,000 lower than last year;

 

    - Minnesota: Production - 897 million pounds, down 1% from May 2021; yield - 1,980 pounds per cow, 20 more than a year ago; herd - 453,000 head, 18,000 lower than last year;

 

    - Ohio: Production - 482 million pounds, down 1.8% from May 2021; yield - 1,920 pounds, 30 more than a year ago; herd - 251,000 head, 9,000 lower than last year;

 

    - South Dakota: Production - 348 million pounds, up 15.2% from May 2021; yield - 1,965 pounds per cow, five more than a year ago; herd - 177,000 head, 23,000 higher than last year.

 

    - Wisconsin: Production - 2.756 billion pounds, up 0.8% from May 2021; yield - 2,165 pounds per cow, 20 more than a year ago; herd - 1.273 million head, 1,000 lower than last year.
