Poultry farms in northern Ghana are shutting down
George Dassah, chairman of Ghana's Northern Regional Poultry Farmers Association, said the poultry farms in the northern region of the country are shutting down because of high production costs, Ghana Web reported.
Dassah said rising costs of poultry feed, particularly maize and soybeans, have affected large amounts of production in the northern region of the country.
He said one of the industry's challenges is the increase in transportation costs, and the high cost of farmers borrowing from banks.
He urged the Ghanaian government to work together with banks to lower the high interest rate of borrowing to boost the poultry farm sector.
Dassah also urged the government to increase sector-specific adoption of quality standards, improve business planning and market penetration strategies, and strengthen buyer-supplier relationships.
