Bulgaria projects good wheat crop this year and increased exports

Petar Kirovski, a senior official in Bulgaria's Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, said the country is projecting a good wheat crop this year close to last year's record harvest, which would allow for increased exports, Reuters reported.

Kirovskis said this year's crop could reach 6.5 million or 6.7 million tonnes depending on the state of sowings in different parts of the country.

Bulgaria is one of Europe's biggest wheat exporters, with a crop of 7.1 million tonnes last year, up from 4.7 million tonnes in 2020, which was a very bad year, and 6.1 million tonnes in 2019.

Bulgaria has so far sold up to 5 million tonnes of its 2021 wheat harvest, despite an annual local consumption of roughly 1.5 million tonnes, according to Kirovski.

He said given this year's predicted strong crop, there will be enough of excess grains over 4 million tonnes that can be exported.
