Indian startup SeaSpire set to launch bioprinted plant-based fish product
India-based startup SeaSpire is set to launch a bioprinted plant-based snapper product in New Zealand and India, claiming to be the first of its kind in the Asia Pacific market to produce bioprinted whole-cut whitefish products, Fish Information & Services reported.
The firm said it is establishing an operational base in India to serve the region, as they are optimistic that this region will see a growth in demand for alternative seafood in the future.
The company will pilot-launch its first set of plant-based seafood offerings in India and New Zealand in the coming months, beginning with plant-based whole-cut snapper fillets, and focus on building an alternative-seafood brand in emerging markets in the Asia Pacific such as Singapore and Australasia.
Shantanu Dhangar, co-founder of SeaSpire, said when it comes to alt-seafoods, they see greenfield opportunities in the world's largest seafood-consuming regions, such as India and Southeast Asia.
He said the compny aims to drive category growth in this region with a range of healthy and delectable alt-seafood, starting with their whole-muscle whitefish fillets.
SeaSpire said they focus on technologies that can replace inefficiencies in seafood production and is looking into the potential of upcycled horticultural side streams as a feedstock for their alternative seafood wholecuts.
Varun Gadodia, the other co-founder of the company, said to address a sustainable food transition for future generations, smart proteins and even smarter production infrastructure are needed.
Gododia said the firm believes that reducing supply chain stress, innovating ingredients, and upcycling feedstock are supporting pillars for their success.
Later this year, the company will exhibit its products at the XPRIZE Foundation's Tomorrow's Protein Summit, and it plans to launch its plant-based whitefish wholecuts in early 2023.
