China's Muyuan maintains top spot in 'mega producer' list for most number of sows

Genesus, which owns over 80% of all registered purebred swine breeding stock in Canada, recently published the 2024 edition of its World Mega Producer list that highlights companies with 100,000 sows or more.

The list comprises 49 companies in 10 different countries and three other World Mega Management Companies. With over 16 million sows on this year's list, these companies represent roughly 20% of all global sow production.

The company with the most sows remains Muyuan Foodstuff Co., Ltd. of China, with over 3.1 million sows in 2023 (up 315,000 sows from 2022). China is home to 25 of the 49 mega producer's headquarters.

Three new entries have joined this year's list including the first-ever entries of companies from Mexico and Vietnam. Bachoco, which is headquartered in Mexico, is number 36 on the list with 120,000 sows. Greenfeed Vietnam Corporation, headquartered in Vietnam, comes in at number 37 with 116,000 sows.

The other new entry is Shennong Group in China with 100,000 sows which rounds out the list at number 49.
