Norwegian firm Moss Maritime to develop new ocean fish farming concept

Norway-based Moss Maritime is collaborating on a project to develop an innovative open ocean fish farming concept for Norwegian aquaculture company Aqualoop, Baird Maritime reported.

The fish farm will be part of the Aqualoop Big Dipper project, with a designed capacity to produce up to 20,000 tonnes of Atlantic Salmon annually.

Moss Maritime has been providing engineering services, ranging from feasibility studies to the current design validation and test campaign using a scale model of the proposed fish farm. While the new solution will initially focus on Atlantic Salmon, it can be adapted for other fish species in any ocean temperature zone and weather conditions. Onboard support systems will enhance the biological production of fish.

The fish farm concept received approval and certification from classification society DNV in 2023. Testing of the scale model is being conducted at the Trondheim facilities of Norwegian research organisation SINTEF.
