Malaysia receives first batch of imported whole chicken

Malaysia's National Farmers' Organisation (NAFAS) has begun importing whole chickens, as the first shipment of 21 metric tonnes arrived on June 17, the New Straits Times reported.

In a statement, the Farmers Organisation Board (LPP) claimed the supply came from poultry farmers who had received authorisation from the Department of Veterinary Services.

The statement also said the next chicken supply will arrive on June 20, consisting of three containers that will be stored in the NAFAS freezer room in Sungai Bakap, Penang, state.

LPP has been tasked with conducting the chicken buffer stock programme through NAFAS and State Farmers' Organizations (PPN) in order to stabilise the country's chicken supply needs.

The LPP said the scheme will be implemented in stages, in partnership with the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) and PPN, particularly in terms of cool room facility utilisation.

LPP also said the chicken will be distributed through the PPN, Area Farmers' Organizations (PPK), and FAMA networks, with LPP monitoring NAFAS' import schedule.

The PPNs of Selangor, Johor, and Perak have been chosen to help NAFAS in implementing the programme, and more PPNs may be included depending on current requirements.
