Ukraine to begin 2006 grain harvest in Crimea



Ukraine will begin this week its 2006 grain harvest in the Crimea peninsula, the local government said.


The grain harvest in the peninsula this year is forecast at 1.10 million tonnes, just down on the 1.16 million tonnes harvested last year.


Ukraine's total grain harvest this year is forecast by the agriculture ministry at 37.6 million tonnes, including 14.5 million tonnes of wheat.


Ukraine's grain harvest in 2005 was 38 million tonnes, compared with 41.8 million tonnes in 2004.


Ukraine's agriculture ministry forecasts the export of grain in the 2006/07 marketing year at 11 million tonnes, including 5-6 million tonnes of wheat.


In the 2004/05 marketing year Ukraine exported a total of 11.54 million tonnes of grain, including 5.46 million tonnes of wheat.


Ukraine has exported 11.5 million tonnes of grain since the beginning of the marketing year Jul 1, 2005 to Jun 1.
