US explores Alaska state's aquaculture potential

In a bid to boost domestic aquaculture and enhance seafood sustainability, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will identify potential aquaculture development sites along the Alaskan coast, Fish Farmer reported.

The initiative aims to engage indigenous tribes and the general public in the selection process of Aquaculture Opportunity Areas (AOAs) that show promise for commercial aquaculture ventures.

The establishment of AOAs involves the evaluation of geographic areas to determine their suitability for sustainable aquaculture practices. NOAA plans to employ a combination of scientific analysis and public engagement to identify areas that meet environmental, social, and economic criteria for commercial aquaculture activities.

The move aligns with NOAA's commitment to ocean preservation and the promotion of domestic aquaculture as outlined in the National Aquaculture Act of 1980, the NOAA Marine Aquaculture Policy, and an executive order issued two years ago, titled "Promoting American Seafood Competitiveness and Economic Growth."

With a wealth of proven science-based tools and strategies at its disposal, NOAA aims to assist communities in making informed decisions about the sustainable development of offshore aquaculture. This development is intended to complement wild-capture fisheries while supporting working waterfronts and the country's seafood processing and distribution infrastructure.

Alaska will become the third region, alongside southern California and the Gulf of Mexico, where NOAA is identifying potential aquaculture opportunity areas.

Janet Coit, the Assistant Administrator of NOAA Fisheries, said that Alaska's unique positioning and vast coastline provides significant potential for a thriving marine aquaculture industry.

As the US heavily relies on seafood imports, including farmed fish, the government seeks to bolster domestic production and reduce dependence on foreign sources.
