Philippines advocacy group optimistic on agricultural safeguard duties

Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (PRRM), an agricultural advocacy group, has expressed optimism regarding the recent implementation of price-based special safeguard duties (SSG) by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) in the Philippines, Philippine Inquirer reported.

The move, aimed at protecting local poultry industry interests, is seen as a crucial step towards maintaining affordability in chicken prices for consumers.

PRRM president Edicio dela Torre highlighted the benefits of the special safeguard duty, emphasising its role in providing immediate relief to the local broiler sector without causing an increase in retail chicken prices.

In April, the country's Bureau of Customs issued Memorandum Circular No 72-2024, which outlines the imposition of price-based SSG on various agricultural products. This includes prepared and preserved meats, chicken, grains, and coffee.
