Denmark pork exports seen to fall this year

Danish pork exports are estimated to fall this year as the flow of weaners exports to Germany accelerates.

During April, over 640,000 weaners were exported - a staggering increase of 61 percent in April last year.

Total export of piglets during the first four months this year is up over 40 percent on the same period last year. German meat exports increased 18 percent in volume in the first quarter of this year.

In value, exports of meat and meat products rose by 13.3 percent. Last year, over 40 percent of pork produced by Westfleisch - German beef slaughterer - went for export and the slaughterer's profits hit record levels at over GBP1.7 million.

Elsewhere in the EU, Spain's exports are also looking healthy. Spain exports 1.3 million tonnes of pork a year, which is about 36 percent of home production. Last year, exports increased 25 percent.
