Indonesia calls for faster action on milk self-sufficiency roadmap as imports cover 80% of demand

Deputy Coordinating Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq urged integrated upstream-to-downstream development of the dairy sector, with domestic output meeting only a quarter of national consumption.

Indonesia's Deputy Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, has called for accelerated implementation of the country's national milk self-sufficiency roadmap, citing domestic production of around 1 million tonnes annually against demand of approximately 4 million tonnes.

Speaking at the 2026 Indonesian Milk Day commemoration in Jakarta on 14 June, Nurofiq said nearly 80% of national milk demand is currently met through imports, underscoring the need for concrete steps to complete the production roadmap covering the full dairy value chain from upstream farming to downstream processing.

Nurofiq said advancing the roadmap would require close collaboration between government, the private sector, research institutions and the wider community, with research playing a key role in developing dairy cattle breeds better suited to Indonesia's tropical climate to improve productivity. He added that downstream development of the dairy industry is also being prioritised to strengthen competitiveness and create greater economic value across the sector.
