Indonesia secures continued access to EU aquaculture market under new regulation

The listing follows direct negotiations with the EU's food safety authority, safeguarding export channels for shrimp, milkfish, catfish and tilapia.

Indonesia has been included in the list of countries permitted to export aquaculture products to the European Union under EU Commission Implementing Regulation No. 2026/1189, established on 4 June 2026, following a period in which the country had been excluded from the previous regulation.

Ishartini, Head of the Marine and Fisheries Product Quality Control and Inspection Agency at Indonesia's Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, said Indonesia had not been listed under the earlier EU Commission Implementing Regulation No. 2024/2598, prompting concern among business players over continued market access. She said the ministry engaged in direct negotiations with the EU's food safety authority, DG SANTE, in Brussels, to secure the updated listing.

Ishartini said the EU, a bloc of 27 countries, is among the world's largest consumers of seafood, with per capita consumption ranging between 24 and 25 kilograms per year and average income of approximately EUR37,900 (approximately Rp630 million). The EU is currently the fifth-largest destination for Indonesian seafood exports.

Key aquaculture commodities exported from Indonesia to the EU include shrimp, milkfish and catfish. According to Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, tilapia has emerged as a new flagship export to the EU market.
