Hong Kong to establish central poultry processing plant
Hong Kong would build a central poultry slaughtering plant to be opened in 2011 to 2012, said York Chow, secretary for Food & Health.
Chow explained that the plant would lower the risk of bird flu outbreaks and safeguard public health.
Hong Kong's government will assess the feasibility of daily chicken culls at retail stalls and a voluntary license surrender scheme for the live poultry trade, he added.
Chow pointed out that the recent bird flu to hit the country may have been caused by smuggled poultry.
