South Korean pork prices soar in May
According to industry reports, the average wholesale price for swine carcasses in South Korea peaked at 4,071 won/kg last month. Retail selling prices for pork products were between 17,900 and 19,800 won/kg.
Reduced swine shipments due to disease and high demand during the picnic season caused the price peak, according to industry feedback.
The trade in swine carcasses dropped 30 percent from last year to an average daily trade of 3,163 carcasses in May.
Pork consumers expect prices to continue climbing as demand usually peaks in the June-August period.
